Syclonus: The Rapper Who Spins Against the Grain

In a music landscape flooded with imitation, Rhode Island-based hip-hop artist Syclonus, born Samuel Threatt Jr., is carving out a lane that is entirely his own. Unapologetically original, quietly confident, and deeply self-aware, Syclonus represents a new wave of conscious hip-hop rooted in real lived experience.

The name itself tells you everything. A cyclone spins counterclockwise, opposite to the norm, and that is precisely how Samuel moves through life. “I live my life different than most people my age, typically going against the grain,” he explains. The deliberate spelling with an “S” instead of a “C” is a personal signature, a nod to his own identity. Add to that an admiration for Cyclonus, the Decepticon known for being true to himself, and you have an artist whose very name is a manifesto.

Samuel’s journey into music was not born in a studio. It was born in the soul. Growing up surrounded by Soul, Jazz, R&B, Blues, and Hip-hop across two different households and never staying rooted in one place for long, music became the one constant that made sense of the world around him. “The feeling music gives you always made me want to create my own,” he says, “and allow others the feelings that so many granted upon me.” That emotional generosity is woven into everything he makes.

Since picking up the mic in 2022, Syclonus has developed a sound he describes as chill, expressive, conscious, and sometimes hype. It is a reflection of a man who finds inspiration in solitude, nature, and meditation. His creative process is patient and intentional: beats on repeat, quiet rooms, and a mind that refuses to rush what deserves time.

The road, however, has not been without its detours. In 2023, gripped by self-doubt and dissatisfaction, he stepped away from music entirely. “I wasn’t satisfied with anything I was doing,” he recalls. “I felt as if I was making a mistake everywhere I turned.” It was a necessary pause. In 2024, he made the defining decision to shed his former name, KDotJay, and fully step into Syclonus. That moment gave him clarity, direction, and true ownership of his own path. He calls this chapter of his life Resurrection.

His track “Success” captures that entire journey in one song. The struggle, the doubt, the drive, and the unwavering belief that rising above your circumstances is not just possible but necessary. The track has already found ears far beyond Rhode Island, with streams logged in Sofia, Bulgaria, and South America, a quiet testament to music’s power to travel without a passport.

At his core, Syclonus makes music for anyone who has ever felt lost, stuck, or alone. His message is simple but powerful: do not let the circumstances you fall into become your permanent address. Life is unpredictable, and the only response worth giving is to live fully and pursue greatness without compromise.

With originality as his compass and his parents’ sacrifices as his fuel, Syclonus is not chasing trends. He is building something that lasts.
